Guidelines for Families 2009 - 2010

The Class

Please keep adult conversation to a minimum. Your musical focus and participation with your child is vital to the class experience for your child and every other participant.

• To avoid accidents, please no running, unless we run as part of a song!

• As long as your child is not hurting him/herself, others or things, try to follow your child musically.

• Please be on time. The “Hello” song is important to children. The waiting room will open 15 minutes before class. Please do not come earlier than that since Miss Amanda should be on site. The classroom door will open 5 minutes before class.

• Weekly attendance is important. If you know you will miss a class, please let Miss Amanda know. If you miss a class due to sickness, call after the class to schedule a make-up

•Make-ups are offered to anyone enrolled with permission, however they are not guaranteed as we get closer to the end of each session, so please try and plan early. (See Make-ups* below)

• If you must correct your child’s behavior, please go to your child and whisper so as not to disturb the class. It makes a difference to the feel of the class and makes the correction more “private” between caretaker and child. Your child, as well as others, will appreciate that!

• Food, drinks and toys must remain in diaper bags. “Lovies” are allowed.

• We acknowledge each musical response of a particular child with gratitude, a “thank you,” instead of clapping. At this age, your child’s musical participation will increase if the focus is not about performance and doing it “correctly.”

• Allow your child to discover the movement or sound for him/herself. You model by doing it yourself. Let your child arrive at “doing” it in his/her own time.

• Toddlers and preschoolers should be told in advance that this is a music class, and that while we will move, sometimes run, and dance to songs there will be other times when we sit and sing, listen or play instruments.

• Most children behave differently in class than they do at home. What happens during the class is expectedly different from what takes place at home. Keep the primary focus on making music a natural and joyful part of your daily life with your child, at home, in the bathtub, in the car, etc.

• During the week, play your CD at home and in the car. Remember to sing and dance along with your child, regardless of how you think you may sound and look! - this will help your child feel more confident in singing and moving during musical activities.

Un-enrolled Friends/Other Siblings

• Un-enrolled siblings and friends may accompany you to class with prior permission of the teacher. The charge for an un-enrolled child is $10 per half hour class. The money goes into a scholarship fund which we use!

Parking and Church Facilities

• Please be sure to park in designated parking spots in the church parking lot. Do not park in the spot for disabled (first on right) or in the two spots for the minister and his wife (first two on left).

• While we have a bathroom with a changing table next to the music room for your convenience, (thank you, Calvary Church!!) you are also welcome to use the bathroom facilities and water fountain on the first floor located near the staircase. Please try to be quiet downstairs since the church offices are next to those facilities.

• Before and after music class, you are welcome to gather and socialize with others upstairs in waiting room near the music room, not downstairs in Parish Hall.

• Due to limited parking, in general, please give yourself 15 minutes after their class to leave and make room for another car.

Safety

• Please drive slowly into the driveway, especially when running late.

• Don’t leave valuables in your car, and make sure to lock your car.

• Make sure to hold hands with your children at all times outside since it’s impossible for people in cars to see your children!

• Inside the building, children must keep their feet on the ground and are not permitted up on Parish Hall stairs or stage, as items from other groups are often left there.

• Children must always be accompanied by an adult.

• If you bring a dog in the car, the dog must remain in the car due to Apple Tree Day Care precautions.

• Children may not be left alone in the waiting room.

• Apple Tree Day Care playground equipment is reserved only for Apple Tree students

Enrollment/Refunds

• New families may enroll any time within the first half of the term. If a parent and child join after the class has begun, the price of the class will be pro-rated.

• No refunds are given after the first class, unless there is an unusual circumstance.

Make-ups

• There are no make-ups during the first and last week of the term.

• With varied hours of operation, we try as much as possible to accommodate parents who can not make their scheduled class due to illness, hospitalizations, travel, work or vacation. Towards the end of the term, especially if your schedule is limited, please understand that there will be times when make-ups are simply not possible.

• Make-ups are only allowed within the term you are enrolled.

• If you know you will be absent, please let Miss Amanda know as far in advance as possible.

• If you wake up sick, call later in the day to schedule a make-up class.

Snow-Days

Miss Amanda’s Music Garden will be closed due to snow or icy conditions if Cincinnati Public Schools are closed. This will be reported early in the morning on most news channels. Closure will also be posted on our website: www.missamandasmusic.com. You will also receive an early morning phone call from Miss Amanda, or we will use a phone tree.

Thanks for your attention to the above guidelines. Now let’s make music!
